Top Wine Suggestions For An Extra Special Mother’s Day Gift

It will soon be Mother’s Day on 10 March, and if you are searching for a perfect way to celebrate, there’s still time to buy a case of wine online and cook a special family meal to accompany it! Alternatively, you could choose one luxury bottle of wine to present alongside a traditional gift of flowers or chocolates. Here are a few ideas.

Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wines are the classic choice for a celebratory occasion, so Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to pop a cork. Prosecco is a perennial favourite and as the first hints of spring are in the air it’s an excellent choice for a gift. It’s light, pleasant and easy to drink, with a crisp and refreshing taste.

Champagne is of course a premium product that will surely be appreciated by your mum for a special treat. For a slightly different twist, go for pink champagne that is infused with strawberry, cherry, and raspberry flavours. Accompany the bottle of fizz with a few other thoughtful gifts for a girl’s night in, such as scented candles and luxury chocolates.

Rosé

Rosé wine is now a very fashionable choice, and its attractive blush hue makes it an ideal gift bottle. It has a light and fruity flavour and is easy to drink on any occasion.

White wine

White is of course a favourite with many wine drinkers. There’s a huge variety of Old and New World whites to choose from, from Sauvignons to Semilions. Some of the finest whites traditionally come from France, but also explore New World wines from countries such as New Zealand and Chile.

Red wine

If your mum prefers the smooth sophistication of red wine, then look for a high quality product that is bursting with flavour. Red wine is not only delicious and a beautiful colour, but it has nutritional value because the grapes are fermented with the skins on, unlike the white wine making process.

This means it contains plant compounds that are transferred from the grape skins and they are rich in tannins and antioxidants such as resveratrol, catechin, epicatechin and proanthocyanidins.

Research has shown that these compounds can help to fight inflammation in the body, and moderate consumption of red wine may have protective effects against heart disease and certain types of cancer. The perfect excuse to enjoy a velvety smooth glass of red with your Mother’s Day lunch!

Full-bodied reds such as Malbec, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo have the highest tannin content, and they have a pleasing boldness and complexity of flavour.

Medium bodied-reds have a lower tannin content and are very popular because they have a pleasing richness without overwhelming the palate. Merlot is a classic choice for its smooth chocolatey notes. Light bodied reds such as pinot noir and beaujolais are a lighter choice and perfect for any occasion.
